A friend told me that recently she had eaten one of the best bennys ever at Timbre Restaurant. You know I had to go back with her to see for myself.

The Crab Cake Benny arrived looking simply like every other benny I’ve seen at every other joint. But the secret to this dish is the crab cake itself – amazingly flavourful and well-seasoned. My friend and the waitress commiserated over the fact that they would like to try some of the other menu items, yet they order the crab cake benny every time.

The menu also offers items such as elk, corned beef and mipkozola. Huh?! Yes, I had never heard of it either. Mipkozola is inuit air-dried muskox. We didn’t try it today, but perhaps one day we’ll go back and not order the crab cake benny. Perhaps.

Sapodilla Restaurant (CLOSED)

UPDATE (03/22/11): Sapodilla is now closed.
Sometimes appearances can be deceiving. On the surface, Sapodilla appears to be tired and nondescript. Decorated in only what I could think to describe as South Pacific plastic chic. But from this obscurity, the highlights appeared only brighter.

Our servers had a keen sense of humour. The menu was budget-friendly – most meals hovered between $4 to $7. And the pancakes, which we found out were made from scratch, were surprisingly delicious. As soon as they were placed in front of me I knew they were going to taste good because they smelled great.

Even though we chose this place today as a matter of convenience, we were satisfied with our breakfast.

The Well

I would have loved to learned more of the backstory of The Well, but I didn't have my detective hat on today. All I know is that it's relatively new - been open since September – and that it's chef-owned.

I believe it is a chef with some skill as demonstrated by our perfectly cooked eggs. My Florentine Eggs Benedict was topped with soft-poached, oozing eggs, as they should be. My friend ordered medium-poached eggs and they arrived exactly as ordered. Nice. As well, I ordered my English muffin to be "well toasted" and it actually was! I always make this request and am very happy when I find that my preference hasn't fallen on deaf ears. Another friend was quite happy with her waffle.

The space is casual. Perfect for just rolling out of bed and walking up the street to meet your friends. I felt like I was in my Auntie's rec room from my childhood, especially given the amount of children that were also present.

Alibi Room

Was it just me, or was this the quietest holiday season ever? It seemed like Vancouver was a ghost town. In light of this, I decided to venture downtown today for breakfast, believing that it would be slow, and therefore low-key, and I was right.

Located on the edge of Gastown, the Alibi Room is rightly known as a destination for the beer lover. They specialize in pouring Pacific Northwest brews, the equivalent of the foodie's "100-mile diet". Well-suited to this function, the 100-year-old heritage building provides a great container for the large, open industrial space with views out onto the railway shipping cars and beyond to the North Shore mountains. With the community tables, this would be a great spot for a casual, large group brunch.

The menu is straight-forward - omelettes, scrambles, french toast – something on it for everyone's tastes.
