5 Spot (Seattle, WA)

The 5 Spot is a long-time Seattle favourite and now one of mine. Their emphasis is on “American Regional Food”, meaning every three months or so, they change up their specials to reflect a different region of American cuisine. The current theme is “Tornado Alley”, referencing the states of Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa. The interesting folk art was also reflective of the motif including an Oklahoman farm house, a painting of Dorothy’s shoes, Nebraska Huskers memorabilia, and a giant hanging tornado sculpture. Even the washrooms were involved by playing The Wizard of Oz over the speaker system. This is what I call commitment to a theme.

To honour this dedication, we felt it necessary to order from the specials menu.
Him – Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs, and me – Tart Cherry and Cream Cheese French Toast. Yes, many places serve chicken fried steak or french toast, but when a restaurant does it right, such as the 5 Spot, it can be an elevating experience. I was caught up in their breakfast whirlwind.
